Hi guys. If there's anyone willing to leave their bike at AiM for 3-5 days, I will send beer. This would contribute to the community of R7 owners looking to run an AiM Solo 2 DL or similar AiM device on track. Hopefully, we can get all sorts of interesting data out of the ECU including brake pressure, wheel speed, gear, throttle et cetera.

This would require bringing your bike to either the AiM Sport offices in Roanoke, VA, or, Lake Elsinore, CA. The guys will need the bike for most likely just 3 days and will work with their ECU team over in Italy to decode all the bits. I'm hoping they can run their tests both with and without the ABS solenoid fuse in place so that we can see if we can still get brake pressure with ABS disabled.

I was due to leave my bike at the Lake Elsinore location on January 14 to have this done but life got in the way and I can no longer travel for the foreseeable future.

Mmmmh, there are only a few specific Yamaha products offered, especially R6 and R1, when it comes to specific cable harnesses. So my conclusion is, if there is a serious need (or interest) for offering something, they would have had time since 2014, since MT-07 (FZ-07) is offered.

So maybe give the Italian headquarter a chance, as the first R7 are rolled out in Europe actually.

Honestly, the R7 will not be much different to the MT ECU. Except the detail, that the quick shifter can be connected now. Every ABS related signal is managed in the ABS ECU separately. Removing the ABS module or pulling the fuse will eliminate related signals in my understanding as well.

As the AiM equipment seems a bit on the rich side, I would wait for the GYRT open ECU and its software. It could not cost less.
Or for the budget approach, something like a mobile app and a GPS antenna, will also collect most of the required data to recap the last stint.

dropbear, I pulled the ABS solenoid fuse the second day I had the bike, back in June, I got an ABS light and no other issues whatsoever. The display and everything worked as it should, just not the ABS. A week ago I replaced the brake lines, bypassing the ABS system completely so definitely no issue with brake pressure now. I also have a pre-release ecu flash that is currently locked because it was pre-release, I don’t know if that would interfere with any Aim testing, mentioning all this in case they were looking for completely stock to start with. I might be interested, I have been looking with interest at the Aim products as I have a couple track bikes without such products, but I already have a full beer fridge and a kegerator, perhaps something made by Aim might be a better fit. ;)

Who do we need to contact?
Call the office you think you might be able to take the bike into. Phone numbers are on their website:

If calling the VA office, ask for Cory; if the CA office, ask for Robbie.

Thank you for considering this.

I’m not sure what they would say to the prerelease firmware and the ABS delete. I’m hoping this exercise will reveal that the ECU publishes fields like ‘front brake pressure requested’ and ‘front brake pressure actuated’, as they can get from the R6 and R1 ECU. I’d like to see how much my brake pressure graph sucks without dropping thousands on an EVO5 setup.

AiM have heard from some of the race teams that run MT/FZ-07s — and have recently acquired R7s — that the ECU is quite different.

Agreed that there are cheaper options than AiM. I don’t like their 1980s industrial design and their Windows-only software is not nice to use. I wish they would hire Jony Ive’s firm to overhaul their products.

What they do have is a lot of users and the ability to share and compare data amongst those users. I can send my coach a data file and a video and he can overlay data from a much better rider on the same bike and show me where I need to improve. It’s that community aspect that provides value.

Any takers?

Last I heard they had an ‘alpha’ version of the protocol based off of the FZ-07. It was missing stuff. I’ve ordered parts from mouser.com to make up a cable to plug into a Solo 2 DL. Also have a CAN logger that I need to make a cable for. I can send them traces from my bike when that’s setup but the easiest for them is to have a bike to tinker with.
