Hello everyone,

Been reading about all of these rattle/ticking sounds that the MT07/R7 engines like to make! My bike is no exception.

I'm getting 3 different noises:
  1. Once the bike warms up there's a distinct tapping sound that increases with RPMs. It sounds quite a bit like valvetrain noise, as if the valves/tappets are out of spec. I've owned my 22 R7 since new and started noticing it after the first 50-100km (got 1700km now)

  2. Under deceleration or light throttle between 3-4k RPM I am getting a metallic rattle/jingle noise from the front of the bike. Almost sounds like the bike isn't in gear properly and plates are clashing with each other & engine is struggling a bit?

  3. On gear shifts I'm also getting a metallic rattle noise.
Took it to the dealer at 1,000km and they said the slight rattle/ticking when the engine is idling is normal for these types of engines.

The noise that worries me the most is the metallic rattle/jingle noise mentioned in the 2nd point above. Mainly noticeable when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd-4th gear (at lower RPM)

Appreciate any advice, thank you. :)

The sound is normal at idle, mine does the same exact thing. Also I’ve noticed it when riding too, but only when my face shield is closed. I think it’s just the noise that the engine makes combined with the sound frequency that happens to make it through my helmet. Either way I haven’t really worried about it, and I haven’t noticed any problems shifting or accelerating whatsoever. Just get a nice exhaust so you don’t hear it😂

Same here, it's just the cross plane motor that Yamaha uses. The R1 is a cross plane 4 and has that ticking or knocking also.....if it was a serious knock. It'd be louder and harder and would cause a lot of damage lol it wouldnt last that long

Same here, noticed it in my helmet and was driving me nuts. Then I noticed when I turned my head or looked down it went away. Just the perfect frequency that is coming into the bottom of helmet and getting amplified. Wish I knew exactly where that jingle was coming from. Has to be something buzzing.

Most likely what you are hearing is the cam chain rattling. This is a pretty common issue on many late model motorcycle engines and the solution is to install an aftermarket manual cam chain tensioner, problem solved!!!
